Negotiating Bottlenecks
Action
Why act? Why me?
- We humans are a mixed bunch. As communities we both clean our nest and soil it. And as individuals we do both too. Yet we can build habits and customs to support better lifestyles. Therefor, I say, it is worthwhile to join in building constructive attitudes, and contribute to an enlightened culture.
- Some days the outlook appears bleak. On a rainy day, you might see no blue sky all day. Then, as humidity decreases and air pressure increases, the clouds evaporate. Above us could be the same amount of water, but in gaseous form rather than liquid droplets.
- Similar transformations happen in a society. The predominant view often prevails. We are great followers.
- So through the difficult seasons, don't lose hope. Your energy may bear fruit later. And one way and another, become a leader. Lead at least yourself.
- Indeed, it is sensible to choose your time. We need you later, so during dangerous times choose a careful path to retain your agency long term.
In summary, you should act because it's necessary, achievable, and we need you.
You know your circumstances best; so you can best plan your path.
But if you're reading this, perhaps you are seeking more ideas. Read on:
Style; How to act
- Plan, and act, from love. It's understandable, and can be helpful, to notice hate. There is plenty of injustice. Then better to turn away from retribution, and transform anger into constructive determination. Act from love for a better future. Then our opponents might join us, because we help them to sense that we are brothers and sisters.
- Much sound work takes the form of preparation; we (you) need knowledge, so study; we need inspiration, so seek models and books; we need support, so seek friends, and reassure yourself.
- Don't be afraid to doubt. Lifetimes of hard work can be spent making the planet and our future worse. First do no avoidable harm. Get the direction right before going far. Therefore don't reassure yourself blindly.
- Keep feeling. That's how we maintain our balance. One day investigate; another day make friends; another day safely store what you already have; another day rest; another day, when you're ready, take a lead; another day take an opening, for opportunities are hard to manufacture. Your feelings are a guide as to what we next need, and how to stay fresh.
- Yes, it's about life; how to live a virtuous life. Virtue leads to satisfaction, and that is more than any money can buy. It's your life, so make and take your own path. You are primarily accountable to yourself.
- To influence the future, you need the best equipment you can fashion. You are the primary tool. Refine yourself. You can't make a good job of it if you are clumsy and uncontrolled. Dedication requires work, starting with oneself.
- To work on a project you believe in is not to go out of your way; it is the way.
- Balance effort and relaxation.
- Don't let your life be accidental. There are many things we can't control. But don't drift too long. You have about 4,000 weeks, some of which may have been used already. At the end, looking back, it will be good to feel that you tried.
- Be modest. Try to avoid exploitation of non-renewables. Be moderate.
- To the extent you can, make your base sustainable and uplifting. Then you won't need to rush to the other end of the earth to obtain serenity. A quiet life can be significant.
- Yes, even make room for others in need. To the point that you retain your own agency. Be watchful for the boundary where greed or flashy appearances sway. Above all help preserve the dignity of others.
- Check your feet are not trampling on others, then follow your heart.

"Causes" and "remedies" are similar (but distinctly different)
The "causes" referred to here are some of the causes of extinction. "Remedies" and "actions" referred to here are measures we might take intended to manage or moderate extinction risks.
Causes, remedies, and actions are all components or factors which go into the mix. Differences arise in the way we classify them.
Many factors have a polarity according to how much they contribute to extinctions; or pointing in the opposite direction how much they contribute towards buzzing and rich life. Another dimension for each factor is how much it is a response arising from deliberation and intention. And some factors are mixed, contributing to risks as well as benefits.
Do you have confidence in acting? Who gave you that right?
Are we allowed to act? Is it right to look for a better future? Indicating my opinion, I offer three characteristics of this stance:
- Purpose or Intention: These actions are intended to have results.
- Authority or Right: We should try to influence the future.
- Power: Our actions are significant causes for life to flourish or flounder.
I leave you to puzzle over whether/how you have acquired the authority to decide anything.
Political systems
Ah. Contested areas.
Citizen panels
It is often too easy for power to be misused to please personal or privileged interests. And likewise for those who are elected to deceive their electorate, or deprive future generations who don't have a vote.
In these and other cases, I recommend the use of citizen panels. People appointed for a limited time, and given responsibility to make the best decision for the community as a whole. Other labels for this approach are sortition and deliberative democracy. The findings of the panels have generally been well respected by the societies using this method.
Universal basic income
I also recommend a universal basic income. That gives people greater options to choose how they contribute to society. It leads to much more voluntary work. People are happier in their work and believe in it. In many societies, money and wealth are overused to guide which enterprises receive our attention and support. Instead, our conscience should be given greater sway.
Informal roles in society
We are all teachers, journalists, and generalists. Usually we are also politicians, and social workers. Through taking up these roles we are involved with the affairs of the community, enabling society to flourish. Respect others playing that part; let their contributions be recognised. We can all observe, report, learn, teach and explain issues, and solve problems. Those exchanges make life worthwhile. Let our communities come to life.
Teaching
When teaching, help the learner explore, and enable them in discovery of their own findings.
Political leadership
When fostering a political position, an explanation carries more weight if it's careful. When considering the reasons you give in support, you do not have to consider popularity; because it's the right thing to do may be sufficient to gather respect. Prepare yourself by knowing why.
A recipe for a constructive, and hence a satisfying life
1 Conceive and build a vision.
2 Work at it, to bring it towards fruition.
3 Then you may proceed with pride.
